Coolant Thermostat Stuck Open (P0128)

📅 Last reviewed: July 2026
What does the P0128 code mean?

P0128 means the coolant is not reaching the minimum temperature the ECM expects within the allotted time after start-up. The root cause is almost always a thermostat stuck in the open position, which lets coolant circulate constantly and keeps the engine from warming up. Severity is low to moderate: the engine runs, but it burns more fuel, pollutes more, and the cabin is slow to heat.

03. Step-by-Step Diagnosis

1

Step 1: Scan for codes and verify P0128 is present. Check freeze frame data for coolant temperature at time of fault.

2

Step 2: Inspect coolant level and condition. Top off if low and check for leaks.

3

Step 3: With engine cold, start and monitor ECT sensor data via scan tool. Compare to intake air temperature; they should be similar. If ECT rises slowly or stays low, suspect thermostat stuck open.

4

Step 4: Visually inspect thermostat housing for leaks or damage. Remove thermostat and test in hot water (should open at specified temperature). Replace if stuck open.

5

Step 5: Check cooling fan operation. If fan runs continuously when engine is cold, repair fan circuit or relay.

6

Step 6: Test ECT sensor resistance and compare to specifications. Check wiring for shorts, opens, or corrosion.

1. Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to drive with this code?

Yes, but not recommended for long distances. The engine may run cooler, reducing fuel economy and increasing emissions. Prolonged driving with a stuck-open thermostat can cause engine wear due to insufficient warm-up.

How much does it cost to fix?

Typically $150-$300 including parts and labor. The thermostat itself is inexpensive ($20-$50), but labor costs vary by vehicle. If the ECT sensor or wiring is faulty, costs may be higher.
