U1218: Exterior Light Module Communication Failure

The U1218 code indicates a communication failure on the Controller Area Network (CAN) or SCP (J1850) bus specific to certain manufacturers. The control module has detected missing or invalid data from the module responsible for managing the exterior lights. This means the lighting module is not transmitting the expected information to the main module (such as the PCM or BCM) via the SAE J1850 communication protocol. This error typically originates from an interruption in the communication line, an electrical fault in the data bus, or an internal malfunction within the exterior light module. When the validation data is not received, the OBD-II system illuminates the Check Engine Light and stores the network fault code.
