The P1803 code indicates a malfunction in the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor circuit. This manufacturer-specific code is triggered when the powertrain control module (PCM) detects a signal from the ECT sensor that is outside the expected operating range or indicates an electrical interruption. The sensor uses a thermistor to measure coolant temperature; the PCM supplies a 5-volt reference voltage and measures the voltage drop as the sensor's resistance changes with temperature. When the reading does not match the time and temperature parameters stored in the PCM's memory, this fault code is stored.
